Family and friends drove and flew in from every corner of the map, turning the Shady Cove hideaway into a revolving door of bear hugs, deck dinners, and dogs demanding their fair share of the birthday attention. Bruce spent the week grinning over three separate berry-loaded birthday tarts. A small forest of candles and a glowing green 70 lit up his face, highlighting the laugh lines he has earned over the years. Trays of grilled skewers kept coming, stories flowed as steadily as the river below, and evening walks along the water regularly dissolved into just one more round of dessert. Mom came up with a game where everyone shared a specific past memory, and Bruce had to guess who wrote it. His friends decided to write theirs as rhyming poems, which left him hilariously stumped.
